Matthew 4:18-22

Follow:  to join one as a disciple, come now.  Come away, to side with His party.

Every disciple “must know” that God truly loves them.

Ways God expresses His love for us:

1.   Love created us:  Psalm 139:13-18Verse 14 tells us we are marvelous; wonderful; be surpassing; be extraordinary.

V. 14 - I thank you high God you are breathtaking!  Body and soul I am marvelously made.  I worship in adoration – what a creation.

Love yourself first and everything else falls into line.  “You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”  Lucille Ball.

Love is our true destiny.  We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone- we find it with others.”  Thomas Merton.

       2.  Love redeemed us:  Romans 5:8 - Christ died for us; demonstrates His love.

Gal. 3:13 – Christ hath redeemed (us from) that self-defeating, cursed life

by absorbing it completely into himself.

       3.  Love pursues us:  John 1:40-42 reveals Peter’s heart!

             Acts 7:58 – Saul’s journey begins/Acts 9:46 reveals his true purpose.

Jesus asks a question – John 1:38:  what are you seeking in life?

        4.  Love adopted us:  Gal. 4:1-7

Eph. 2:19 – members of the household of God (family)

Followers of Christ are Called

Dietrich Bonhoeffer states “Salvation is free – but discipleship will cost you your life.”

When Jesus calls us to follow, he calls us to leave. .   Mark 1:16-20

Being a disciple means being made into something different.

     1.   Family - Luke 14:26-27, verse 20:  who is my mother, brother, sisters.

     2.   Homes/materialism – Mark 10:29-30; Luke 9:59-62

If one cannot follow the Master with humility and submission, without conditions, one cannot be His disciple.

     3.   Narcissism – excessive devotion to oneself or one’s appearance.  Gal. 2:20; II Cor. 11: 22

     4.   The lie that our self worth is the equivalent of our net worth.  Luke 5:4-11

     5.   Our bitter resentments and petty gossip.   Mark 11:25-26

     6.   Our destructive volcanic rage.  Prov. 16:32; Eph. 4:30-32

     7.   Our racism:  Acts 1:8
